Building Stronger Communities Through Research, Education & Exploration

Our aim is to foster in all people a desire to explore the world, to participate in exploration and discovery with others, and through collaboration make those important new discoveries that help all of us better understand and appreciate our shared history.

Research. Educate. Explore.

Building on three decades of acclaimed scholarship, research and new discoveries, the 1421 Research, Education and Exploration Foundation is a USA-based, participation-driving foundation with the mission to promote collaborative research, education and public awareness of the history of exploration and show that globalization has been a positive force for thousands of years.

We have through our long and sustained efforts, become a nexus point for the study of exploration, the exchange of academic and non-academic / public data related to Zheng He (15th C. Chinese Admiral) and his voyages, and for general public-oriented education, awareness-building and informative outreach.  We promote the sharing and appreciation of culture, of cultural history, of diversity & inclusion, and of exploration as a tool for education. We believe everyone should have the chance to experience the thrill of creating history.

The 1421 Foundation unites enthusiasts, supporters, and academics towards a vision of modern collaborative research, participatory exploration, and shared discovery with the purpose of creating meaningful, even thrilling, educational programs delivered through traditional, digital and social networking platforms.

“We have… beheld in the ocean huge waves like mountains rising sky-high, and we have set eyes on barbarian regions far away, hidden in a blue transparency of light vapors, whilst our sails, loftily unfurled like clouds, day and night continued their course, rapid like that of a star, traversing those savage waves.”

— ADMIRAL ZHENG HE

How We Build Stronger Communities

Create physical and digital venues where questions about history can be safely asked and new theories respectfully discussed.

Produce learning and development programs for children that use the thrill of exploration and discovery to teaching cultural sensitivity and inclusive behaviors.

Build partnerships with other like-minded organizations to deliver cultural-heritage exhibits, seminars, documentaries, and human interest stories.

Gather and share evidence that support alternative viewpoints on the seminal moments in human migration, the age of exploration, and the development of civilization.
